Not every tired kitchen needs replacing. When the clients approached SJM Kitchens, the units were still in good condition and they were keen to keep their granite worktops - what had dated were the doors and drawer frontals.
The brief, then, was a refresh rather than a rebuild: replace what looked tired, keep what was still sound. The Riva range was specified in a painted finish for the new doors and drawer frontals, with some doors changed to glass frontals to break up the runs and add display space.
The quote covered supply and installation of the door and drawer frontals along with the trim that finishes a kitchen properly - plinths, cornice, pelmet and end panels. The work ran in Yateley, Hampshire across one week, to a budget of GBP 4,000.
A door and frontal replacement is a precision job rather than a heavy one. Every new door and drawer front has to match the existing carcasses exactly, and the trim – plinths, cornice, pelmet and end panels – has to line up with cabinetry that was fitted years earlier.
That work happened at survey stage. Everything was measured and specified before anything was ordered, and the result was a clean install: as the client noted, nothing cropped up on site, because the planning at survey had already dealt with it.
On site, a single trade was needed – a kitchen installer. The dated doors and drawer frontals came off, the new Riva painted frontals went on, with the selected doors swapped for glass frontals, and the plinths, cornice, pelmet and end panels were fitted to finish the runs. The existing units and granite worktops stayed exactly where they were.
The clients kept their granite worktops and their existing units, and still ended up with a kitchen that looks new. What they picked out was simply the transformation it made to their space - the same room, the same layout, but reading as a current kitchen rather than a tired one, with the glass fronted cabinets adding a lift the old doors never had. They also valued how professional and clear the process was from start to finish.
