The client's kitchen in Farnborough was, by her own description, really dull and dated. The bigger problem was that the room was not earning its keep - the space was there, but the layout was not making use of it. She wanted a kitchen that felt fresh and modern and, above all, gave her a more spacious, usable space.
SJM Kitchens was engaged for the full job: design, supply and installation, with electrical work and flooring included in the quote. The Linear range was specified in a gloss painted finish, with laminate worktops, a splashback, LVT flooring and new appliances.
The project ran across two weeks in Farnborough, Hampshire, to a budget of GBP 16,000.
Design came first, because the brief was as much about layout as it was about finish. Getting more usable space out of the room meant rethinking how the kitchen was arranged rather than simply replacing what was already there.
Once the old units came out, the job’s one real unknown surfaced. The pipework behind them was very old and needed replacing outright rather than reconnecting – and it needed reconfiguring to suit the revised layout. This is the kind of thing that cannot be seen at survey stage, because it only becomes visible when the units are removed. It was replaced and reconfigured in full before the new kitchen went in.
Three trades were coordinated across the fortnight: a kitchen installer, an electrician and a flooring specialist. The electrical work was completed alongside the new pipework, then the Linear gloss painted units, laminate worktops and splashback were installed, and the LVT flooring and new appliances completed the room.
The kitchen the client got back was the one she had pictured. What she valued most was how much more practical and modern everything was - the same room, but rearranged so that the space actually worked, and finished in a gloss painted scheme that reads as bright and current rather than dull and dated. The job finished on time, which mattered to her, and her summary of the process was simply that she loved it.
